To promote National Geographic’s new show, One Strange Rock, the immersive team was tasked with creating an immersive experience that amplified the core idea of the show: astronauts and their view of the Earth. To do this, we gave participants the opportunity suit up and partake in their own personal space experience.
Framestore created VFX and footage for the main show, and we sought to select appropriate elements to tell a story which would be compelling within a headset-based experience. We also filmed interviews with several of the astronauts appearing in the show to feature throughout and narrate the experience. Creating a custom distortion map allowed us to display the content at the correct scale within helmet’s curved projection screen.
The activation picked up a host of awards at 2018’s Cannes Lions Festival, in several categories surrounding innovative use of technology.
